Today's post is about respect. Respect for all urban cultures that involve Hip-Hop as a piece of it. So my respect goes out to Graffiti writers. Now we all think that writing on someone else's property isn't cool. Repeat. It is not cool writing on someone else's property. Fact. I respect tagging though, I used to do it. Did throw ups on clean walls and helped in countless bombing runs. It's all about a rebellion that taggers and artist have inside. To be seen and felt through vision. To say I did that, it's me look. Through the trials of life I have grown to a point that I don't need to do this any more. I've found glow in other parts of the culture without defacing property. Without that rebellious drive I had when I was young I would not be where I am today. So Graffiti, big ups to you on this day... Also, check out this movie. It's tight.

B-Boys Live On

Despite mainstream belief, b-boys do not necessarily break exclusively to hip hop. Original breaks from DJ Kool Herc, Bambaataa were taken from old soul and funk records therefore these dance moves were developed over this genre of music. If not this type, b-boys will prefer most break beats from ‘80s tracks. Modern main-stream hip hop is generally not designed for breaking with no specific break sessions to move around. Music is of the utmost importance to a b-boy. A true artist finds it imperative to have sound knowledge of breaking music in order to understand and carry the ability to dance to it. This concentrated knowledge of the music is displayed with moves as a b-boy highlights specific focal points in each song, narrating with their motions perhaps with a freeze, which is often humorous as well as impressive. (Although the term break-beats sounds like a name for what b-boys break to, it is mostly used to refer to certain genres in electronica.)

Jay-Z is known worldwide. Has mad respect in mostly all circles of rap. I mean, who would say no to being on the track with Jay-Z? He's always been consistent with the flow and has a lot of stripes under his belt. The problem is, there are other rappers too who posses the same impressive resume' as Jay. When you throw the platinum plaqes away and it all comes down to just the rhyme, Jay-Z is still there in the midst of conversation. Will he jump in and out of rap forever? Who knows? He's given the world more than enough already.

Old School Hip-Hop Review - Jungle Brothers "Straight Out The Jungle"

Loved by few and unliked by many. The Source to my knowledge did not give Straight Out The Jungle five mics but in my opinion it deserves them. Afrika Baby Bambaataa, Mike G and Sammy B are the forefathers of the Native Tongue movement. The first time I ever heard the JBs was on "I'll House You" in late '87. This album is packed with hits and any real hip-hop head will like. The fact that it has a more of a tribal feel some won't like it. Whatever the case if you don't have this album in your collection you might be missing a very important piece of history. My favorite song is the title cut
"Straight Out The Jungle". This has been one of my favorite jams and will go down for me in my top 100 of all time favorite hip-hop songs. Love live the JBs and we gotta give them them props because they helped bring new ideas and expansion to the game.

I'm Baaack!!!

Been almost a year since I did my last post. Also, this year I'm thinking about sharing my music with the rest of the world. So I will be uploading old school hip-hop from time to time. Also I still will be giving you my in-sight and knowledge that I have from my prospective. So everyone take care and be ready.

Top 15 Songs From 1985

TOP 15 SONG FROM 1985

1. I have to say around the time that this album came out Run-DMC already was popping. This album only had a couple of songs on it but the main one "Jam On It" will live forever. I can't say it anymore plain. This record will not get much play today as most oldschool hip-hop does'nt anyway, but it still lives on in the heart of the real B-Boy. This album was a stepping stone for hip-hop producers to get down with that electrosound. I was a mere 11 years old but I remember it like it was yesterday. Cosmo D & Chilly B were the voices of Newcleus and we used to love that Wikki, Wikki, Wikki. So dig in your crates or go through youe digital files and give this album a listen. If you don't have it, go out and try to find it on some kind of download as it will be worth it.

Old School Hip-Hop Review - Black Moon - "enta da stage"

1993 - (Nervous Records) Who got the props!! When this album came out Black Moon was already a force in the game. "Props" was already a huge single and Buckshot had taken his seat as one of the premiere emcees. Along with 5ft and DJ Evil D the three of them made was huge impact on the backpacker rapper. This album was full of jams that you could just listen to and feel like Hip-Hop was going somewhere. I Got Cha Opin (Remix) and How Many MC's were huge as well for the group. With it's smooth sounds and melodic flows from Buckshot there was no way you could deny Black Moon. All the way to the top, they had the momentum to take the rap game by storm. This record has to go into my top 50 of all time. I haven't comprised a list of that because there is too much good music from the old school to narrow it down, but if I was making a list this album would be in it. Make no mistake, Black Moon may be a forgotten group and haven't had much success since "Who Got The Props", but their legacy will live on through this first album and solidify themselves as powerhouse in the year of 1993-94.

Hip-Hop Books For The Mind

To all out there interested in learning about Hip-Hop and how it all got started. Well, there are two books that I would recommend for you all. That is the very famous book by Jeff Chang called "Can't Stop Won't Stop". This is a very good book and it's a deep read. It's one of the best ever written and it goes into extreme detail about our culture and how it got started and why. I would encourage all Hip-Hop enthusiasts to take some time out of your busy days and get involved in your culture by picking up this piece of dynamic work.

The second book I would like to talk bout is "Yes Yes Y'all". This book covers just the first decade of Hip-Hop. It talks to a lot of the pioneers about there experiences with the music and culture from it's beginnings. This book will keep you entertained because it is full of rare photos and rare interviews. Pick this book up as it will be good for your soul. You will also get a first hand look into the lives of these pioneers as they help bring the culture out of the darkness and into the light of the world today.

Who Would Of Thought???

This record right here, some in the industry may consider this a fake. Some may consider this real. But what both sides agree on is that this record was the start of rap music on record. Thanks to Sylvia Robinson, a young entrepreneur who caught a taste of rap music one night while she was at a club or a party of some kind. She grabs three random guys and puts them all together and they make a record. Grandmaster Caz (Cold Crush Brothers) subsequently had a friendship with Big Bank Hank, and the rest as they say is history. So let's think about this, Rapper's Delight is still getting airplay today. Who would of thought that a simple Hip-Hop would have an effect on the world. Low and behold, let us all try to keep this thing going, we have so much more to share than what they think. Our time is now, Rapper's Delight is just of how far that they could date us. We are timeless. Love life. One love from Big Nature.

Old School Hip-Hop Review - Whodini - "Escape"

1984 - (Jive Records) - When Whodini first came out in 1983 their record was released before Run-DMC's was. The first album didn't do much at the time and people were still taking rapping as a joke. It was self entitled and if you ask most people they really can't remember any jams from that album. Now the second album Escape has three guaranteed party rockers that will make the 30+ Hip-Hop head go into a frenzy. I'm talking about Five Minutes Of Funk, Friends and Freaks Come Out At Night. These songs definitely bring back memories of the outdoor block parties and those feel good times in the club. I have to admit the rapper Jalil, Ecstasy and Grandmaster Dee knew what the streets wanted to hear and they did it in a big way. This album may not have had the acclaim that Run, D, and Jay had with there first but it's definitely up there with some of the greats. It's hard to find and if you do find it you had better keep it secure and in a safe place. Most times I play these jams to help me reminisce about when I was a kid growing up in Frisco. These songs are timeless and if there was a Hip-Hop hall of fame, Whodini would be first ballot inductees.

The Real B-Boys

Now I'm usually not down with anything commercial when it's comes to Hip-Hop because I believe that it comes from the streets and should stay in the streets. I will make one exception here in this case. I'm sitting home flipping threw the channels and I see Randy Jackson's America's Best Dance Crew on MTV. I've watched it a few times before this season, but last night feeling a little irie I decided to watch the full hour. Most of the crews on there are pretty good and come up with some powerful routines, but there are three crews that stand out the most and represent B-Boying to the heart. There is the Boogie Bots (Washington D.C.), Supreme Soul (San Francisco, CA) and Super Cr3w (Las Vegas,NV). I was most impressed with Boogie Bots because I think they had the most original routine of the night. So then I go to YOUTUBE to find out if I could see a few clips of these groups. Out of all the clips that I seen I was most impressed with this one B-Boy named Do-Knock from Super Cr3w. This guy is the real deal!! He's got moves that James Brown would even be impressed with. So if you haven't seen B-Boys get down lately, here is a collection of Do-Knock getting ill with his superior skills as a representative of Hip-Hop and what B-Boys actually do.

"Do-Knock Greatest Hits"

Old School Hip-Hop Classic Videos - Chi Ali - "RoadRunner"

Can't forget the classics. From the CDJ to the Serrato program it has taken DJs to a whole new height. I just would like to say that Vinyl is what has got us to this point and I would like to extend my thanks to it. If not for the Vinyl we would not be where we are today. So much love goes out to the DJs still spinnin it and OneLove to those who have made the smooth transition to the digital age. YZ is a man that has put smooth and intelligent rhymes down to a science. This album is a collection of YZ's work from his first album "In Control Of Things" and a few songs that came out on a EP he released sometime after that. If you remember the song "Tower With The Power", it puts you in a feel good mood to carry you throughout the day. I had been a fan of YZ since he came into the game in the early 90s. This best of record is packed with jams to make you think about how it used to be back in the days. I give YZ a 10 with this album because he stepped out of the realm of guns and gold and into the area and conscience rap. For that he deserves a high mark. So go out and try to find this rare piece of work and add it to your collection of history that is destined to be timeless.

Top 15 Songs From 1984

TOP 15 SONGS FROM 1984

1. This album was well excepted and had been long over due as far as Hip-Hop heads were concerned. We all thought De La was dead and the would leave the game on a high note. The previous album they dropped in 1991, some would say it was the best they ever been. Buhloone Minstate was sort of different in it's own aspect. The record as a whole is a great listen and has alot of thump to it. "Breakadawn" and "Ego Trippin' [Part II] are sure shot winners and help this album reach it's fullest capacity. This is one De La record that is somewhat overlooked but will always be remembered for it's style and charisma. Pos, Dove and Mase are pioneers and have always tryed to keep that Native Tongue music going for the new millennium.

Old School Hip-Hop Classic Videos - M.C. This album has been talked about since Nas came up with the title "Nigger". Many people are truly offended by it's title so I believe it is going as the untitled album, but I think we all know what the content will be. I expect it to be vintage Nas in the freshest form. I heard the Nigger Tape with Green Lantern and I have to say it was full of fire. If that is any indication of how this album will be were in trouble. So like T.O. said, "get ya popcorn" because this is going to be something to see. The release date is 7-15-2008. The world will be watching.

Old School Hip-Hop Review - Stetsasonic - "In Full Gear"

1988 - (Tommy Boy)- This album from Stetsasonic in my opinion is the best they ever released in there short time as the world's first Hip-Hop band. The first album On Fire was a hot one, that goes without saying to any true fan of the music. In Full Gear had everything from hard beats and well crafted rhymes. Daddy-O, Frukwan (Gravediggaz), Wise (The Human Beat Machine) and M.C. Delite were all highly skilled emcees of their time. DBC and a young D.J. Prince Paul controlled the beats and they were a smash. The main single I think everyone remembers is "Talking All That Jazz". It was a song pointed to all the people in the industry who didn't approve of sampling. At this time back in 1988 most artists could get away with it, but nowadays we all know that if you sample a record you have to pay. The Stet definitely took the music to new heights back in the day. For all that is said about the golden era of rap music (1986-1991) Stetsasonic was the first to coin the phrase Hip-Hop band and truly live up to the term that they introduced.

Rock Steady Forever

Gotta give props to the ones who kept B-Boying going after 1977. It was given five mics when the Source had real Hip-Hop heads listening to the music. There is a lot that I can say about this album but those reading this who are familiar with what Main Source did, I need not to reach. "Watch Roger Do His Thing" is my track of favorite. It's a song with hard beats and tight rhymes about positive brothers trying to do the right things with their lives is why. "Live At The Barbecue" is probably the most recognized of all songs on this unprecedented album. The song features a fresh kid named Nasty Nas. A creative masterpiece with very little flaws if any. Large Professor, K-Cut and Sir Scratch put together something for all of us to carry with us for a very long time. If your ever looking for some early 1990s Hip-Hop you won't have to look that much further than this.

Old School Hip-Hop Review - Special Ed, "Youngest In Charge"

1989 - (Profile Records) - This album from from Special Ed came power packed with explosive word play and lyrical movement. It had a force to go up against some the top albums of that year. Ed held things down with his classics "I Got It Made and I'm The Magnificent" that were definate club rockers. If you had your ear plugged to the streets at the time this album was realesed, you will find a place for these jams in your collection of rap music. 1989 was a year of EPMD, De La Soul, and many other groups and solo acts. Special Ed fit himself into that mainstream of real emcees when this album was realeased. Some will consider him a pioneer by his peers.

More Reviews!!!

Mary J. Blige - Growing Pains

3.5 of 5 - Mary, Mary, why ya buggin? Naww just playing. This is a hit and miss LP from Miss Blige. I love the way the flow of the album goes and from the start it takes off in a big way. Mary always has had the pipes on her to blow most of these fake R&B singers out of the water. I guess you could tell I am a big fan of Mary. I have been there since before What's the 411? when she was doing those background vocals for Father M.C.. Truly, Mary has shown dramatic growth and has put everything on the table for all of her fans to share with her. This album to me just seems like a continuation of The Breakthrough. With the exception of the lead single "Just Fine" and "Shakedown" featuring Usher, the album just moves at a steady pace. Be thankful we have somebody today to give us the real R&B experience. Looks like Mary is moving away from Hip-Hop Soul and going back to the true roots of the soulful art. Pick this album up and make sure you keep an open heart for her pain.

Birdman - 5 Star Stunna

3 of 5 - Who's got more money than the Birdman? I don't know but if you do please let me know because that's all the the Birdman has to say on this album. How much money I got, how many guns I got and how many more hoes I got. I thought this music here was to uplift each. Teach each person what they need in daily life to survive these hectic streets. I know you saying "Big Nature is a hater cause' he don't got no money". Well, I never will hate on the next man, but when it comes to this music I have a strong opinion. Now the beats is hard and the rhymes is okay. I mean if you like constantly hearing someone telling you what they have and what you don't have. But c'mon after a while give it a break. I never had to walk around talking about what I'm doing but Birdman obviously wants people to know what's up with him. I won't say don't buy this album because at the core it is a good piece of work. The problem is that the album is too repetitive and lacks originality. Didn't I hear Birdman talking about guns, cars, money and hoes on Fast Money in '05? I guess with all those guns and all the money, cars and hoes he won't ever run out of things to talk about.

Freeway - Free At Last

4.5 of 5 - Oh God I could not wait for Freeway to drop this one. This album is hott from start to finish. Freeway has not fallen off one bit since Philadelphia Freeway. Now that album was a classic and a party rocker in it's own. Give it up to the man right here. They say Jay-Z and Kanye West are keeping the Roc alive, but it's Freeway who shows the most skill. Over the top beats and precision rhymes is what makes this record so fun to listen to. He made a voyage to Mecca and came back on fire. What else can I say? If you don't have this album in your collection your not a hip-hop head. This easily goes as one of the best dropped LPs in '07. I pumped this disc 3 days straight until I had to ease back because my ears were turning into sushi. Underground or mainstream Freeway is an emcee that has a force to be reckoned with. Take it from Big Nature. I know good music and this it where it's at.

David Banner - The Greatest Story Ever Told

3 of 5 - Now David Banner is a very original cat. Be it music, videos, interviews or whatever. He's a very likable guy. That doesn't mean that he deserves a head nod on this LP. Now the South has there own way of doing things and sometimes it's hard to understand. Are they trying to be lyrical or are they trying to just put the dump in the trunk? Sounds like on this album it's a combination of both. Everybody wants to be the biggest stunter in the world but David Banner doesn't have to. He has the flare and disposition to carry himself without the flaunt. His production is always on point, ask anybody. This record just lacks on creativity in comparison to other southern jewels on the charts. David Banner is ready for the big, big time he just need to find his spot among all the other artists coming out of the South. Until he does this, the public will continue to overlook average projects. The Greatest Story Ever Told still hasn't been told yet and we'll keep waiting to hear it.

The First Post

Welcome All,

I have decided to start off a blog where I rate music of today, be it only Hip-Hop and R&B and maybe some pop if it's worth checking out. If you ask my opinion I think that Lupe himself is just a above average M.C.. Food & Liquor was definitely an album that will define a time in it's own era. Having listened to it more than a lot I can say that the vibe he generated on Food & Liquor is not duplicated on The Cool. The lead single is tight. Superstar has that stadium sound. But as for the rest of the album it just isn't there. Who would of thought? An emcee with so much promise and praise would fall victim to the sophomore jinx.

Scarface - MADE
4.5 of 5 - No, No, No!! Your mind isn't playing tricks on you. That's right Mr Scarface is back once again. The veteran emcee goes for broke on this album. While some may say he might of fell off others may say he's better than ever. MADE is another classic album from the original h-town boy. Hard beats and tight rhymes is what it's all about and Scarface does it full fledged. You got to give it up to him for making this one memorable. The way the industry is now flooded with wannabees, Scarface brings it back to the real. Take it from Big Nature, go cop this album you won't be disappointed nor will you be surprised. If you need a fix for some real gangsta rap this is it.

Wu Tang Clan - 8 Diagrams
3.5 of 5 - Let's get it y'all. Listenn!!! Now I love the Wu. These guys have made Hip-Hop fun since they entered the game in 1993. Just look at how much history they have, it's amazing what the have accomplished. There isn't much I can say about this album. It's the typical Wu Tang thump, everything that you would expect a Wu Tang LP to be. Everybody is on point with the rhymes and the RZA is always tight with the beats. Take it from someone who's been listening to the Wu since the beginning, this album 8 Diagrams is very original in it's own kind of way. But something is just missing from the whole recipe. If your a Wu fan you'll think it's a decent album. If your someone who doesn't really know about the Wu you should look over this album as it won't do much for you. If your looking for the Hip-Hop of today, the Wu is still ahead of their time and still on top of the whole Hip-Hop game.

Jay-Z - American Gangster
4 of 5 - I guess we really can't call this a comeback for Jigga man can we. I mean Kingdom Come wasn't so great but we all knew that Jay-Z had it in him to make classic records. Timeless records to keep the generation going. This album does give you that Reasonable Doubt feel, but Jay-Z is more mature and really knows what works for him more so than ever. With a masters degree in the art of flow there is nothing you can tell Jay-Z he can't do. This album American Gangster is a stand alone gem. From start to finish Shawn Carter gives a industry example of taking an idea and running with it. What you missed from Jay-Z two years ago is replaced in this new album with a powerful impact. Pick this one up add it to your collection and make sure you realize that Jay-Z may be the last link to the true emcee.

Free Counter
